, breaks going to obama's side. the romney performance overseas when he blew that thing with cameron. the masterful performance by bill clinton where he reset the clock on the economy. of course, this 47%. these breaks have been going toward obama, haven't they? i mean, i can't think the last time romney got a break. >> reporter: no, really not since -- you have to go back, i would say, to may or june at the earliest to come up with a time where you feel like romney was controlling the narrative, controlling the tempo of this campaign. and then, you're right, didn't catch a break. it starts with the health care ruling at the end of june that somehow goes obama's way and then it marched through july, he takes a week off. a lot of people question that. then he ends up doing this overseas trip, as you point out. they blew their convention. blew an opportunity there. one thing about romney is he's had more experience going into a big debate behind than any other candidate at this point in time. i mean, he had this a couple of times. he needed a good debate performance to save himself in

to accomplish. i think for governor romney he needs to have a strong performance. it's not just about one performance for him. his problem is a lack of consistency. he's got to have a good wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday. every day to the election. if you see him give one good performance and the next day they're off message, it's more of what we've seen the bumbling along throughout the campaign. and i think for president obama the challenge is, as my former boss howard dean said, don't get irritable. it's going to be hard when governor romney is going to try to get him with his little zingers, to not get annoyed at the lack of seriousness and the lack of actual facts. so i think most of us at this point are expecting, romney can have a mediocre performance and i think he will get good spin the next day. >> steve, the romney campaign is up against another difficulty in the poll which is the public's actual expectation at this point. the "washington post" poll shows that among likely voters, 55% of them expect president obama to win the debate. 31% expect mitt romney to win the deba

romney's father-in-law, ann romney's father was a devout atheist. after his death, mitt romney himself performed the posthumous baptism making him a mormon. we've heard a lot about this in the past year. one mormon church baptized anne frank despite the church's promise to not proxy baptize holocaust victims. are you a bit surprised things like that haven't gotten more scrutiny in the press given the attention that was paid to jeremiah wright a few years ago? >> i think back in february, i think it was, there was kind of a lot of scrutiny on proxy baptisms because it came out that like you said, holocaust victims had been getting baptized. and i think that there was even a case where -- i can't remember -- somebody was baptized -- one prominent figure was baptized who wasn't even dead it turned out. proxy baptism for someone who hadn't died yet. >> john: wow. i'm trying to figure out if that's more or less offensive than baptizing a person without their consent. >> the mormon church has laid out clear ground rul
